If you’ve been a reader around here for a while then you probably already know that I’m a HUGE dessert love, hey I’m a baker after all! Everything that has to do with cupcakes, frosting and a huge amount of chocolate makes me happy (that and lemon cookies). But I also have a thing for wine and consider it pretty cool, so after a series of wine tasting lessons I decided to couple up my both loves into one post: How to Pair Wine with Dessert.
Truth is most people never think about pairing wine with dessert. Pairing it with a meats pasta and seafood? Bring it on! But comes dessert tie and most people switch to something like a coffee or tea. However, wine can be a great dessert pairing as well, you just need to know how to pick the right one for your meal.
I especially love wine and dessert pairings in the Summer months when desserts tend to be on the fruity side and when the weather is so hot that the thought of drinking a hot coffee makes me question everything in life. But think about this a cold watermelon skewer and a big glass of chilled wine is the perfect companion for a laidback outdoor soiree.
How to Pair Wine with Dessert
- Plan your desserts and wines in advance: If you want to host a party, get together or even a small dinner planning is the way to go. Think ahead of the dessert you want to serve, so you have enough time to brainstorm the best wines to go with them.
- Stick to the rule of thumb: The darker the dessert, the darker the wine, the lighter the dessert, the lighter the wine. This is the best piece of advice ever and works like a charm almost every time. If you have a light dessert like a cheesecake or an apple tart stick with whites. Have something dark like chocolate? Then go with the reds.
- Fruity desserts and wines always go hand in hand: Truth is the best desserts to pair are the ones that are fruity and light, like a fruit salad, grilled watermelon, berry and mascarpone cups, and even berry cupcakes and lemon cookies or lemon cake. Those desserts always pair great with wines.
- Pick a wine you love: At least for me, this is one of the most important things you can do in order to pair wine with dessert. Pick a wine you absolutely love, and the pairing will be so much easier! I personally love Jadot Wine. They are the number 1 brand of French wine in the United States and since its founding in 1859 have earned a reputation as one of the most revered wine houses in Burgundy. Another great thing about their wines is that they are versatile, they are fresh and light and fruity so they go great with all your favorite foods (which obviously includes all the desserts!) You can find where to purchase Jadot here.
