If you are looking for some keto friendly pre workout supplements then keep reading! I’m rounding up the list with the very best ones.
There are some incredible benefits of following a low carb and ketogenic diet and I’ve honestly seen some really good results with weight management as well as some health related benefits.
However it’s not one of those diets where you can wonder into a shop and randomly pick something of the shelf, not even supplements.
So I decided to test and try some and compile the ultimate list of keto friendly pre workouts.
But before we jump in..
What is a pre workout?
A pre workout is basically a supplement that boosts you energy levels. This increased energy allows you to train better, harder and longer (and sometimes just gives you the little push to get started). They are a great way to amp up your workout session.
Most pre workouts have caffeine, energy boosting ingredients and sugar or simple carbs so the traditional ones are definitely not keto friendly.
Do you need to include a pre-workout as part of your diet?
Not really. They are a supplement, something you might take to supplement an specific area but they are definitely not a must have.
However if you are looking for a boost of energy and some increased exercise performance then a pre workout might be a good addition.
On another note when you are starting a high-fat diet and just getting into ketosis you might feel low energy which makes it difficult to workout. So that might be a good reason to pick a pre-workout drink.
Best Keto Friendly Pre Workout Supplements
Now that we cleared that traditional pre workout drinks might not be a good choice if you are following a low-carb diet and that they are not a must let’s jump into the list of the very best keto pre-workout supplements.
Cellucor C4 Original Pre Workut
I’m actually putting this first on the list because it’s one of those workout products you can find pretty much anywhere so it’s a great way to get started with supplements. It’s also one of the most popular options when it comes to pre workouts so I was surprised when I found out it was a keto friendly pre workout.
It’s a favorite with bodybuilders because it increases your blood flow. If lifting weights is the type of training you like then this increased blood flow will definitely result in a better pump.
It has zero carbs, zero sugar, and zero calories so it wont take you out of ketosis and comes packed with vitamin C and vitamin B12. it also contains a little bit of creatine monohydrate.
Besides being available pretty much anywhere I also love the fact that it comes in different flavors:
- Orange Burst
- Fruit Punch
- Cherry Limeade
- Icy Blue Razz
- Watermelon
- Pink Lemonade
- Strawberry Margarita
It comes in a powder form so you can mix it with water and get a super refreshing workout drink that has great taste.
Perfect Keto Perform Keto Sports Drink
What I really like about this brand is that’s specifically made for keto dieters. It has no added sugars and no artificial flavors and has a really clean label to boost your workout performance.
It also has less caffeine than traditional pre-workouts so if you usually train in the afternoon or if you are looking to reduce your caffeine intake this is a great choice. It has 0 grams of carbs and only 50 calories per servings.
The ingredients are pretty amazing:
BHBs: Beta-hydroxybutyrate is a ketone body. Ketone bodies are the molecules that provide your body with energy when there’s no glucose. This exogenous ketones support your body when on ketosis.
MCT: Or medium-chain triglycerides help with mental acuity, focus and energy.
BCAAs: Amino acids that help boost athletic performance.
Creatine: That improves strenght
Beta Alanine and L-Citruline: To help promote endurance
Caffeine: The caffeine in this pre workout comes form green tea to help with energy production.
It comes in lemon flavor and on their blog have a couple of different recipes and ideas to mix it up.
Perform Keto Sport Drink is a good option that supports the state of ketosis while being a great energy source to boost any workout. It also helps with cognitive function and feeling sharp and awake. Overall I really like this keto friendly pre workout.
BPI Sports Ketogenic Pre Workout
This supplement was also made with ketogenic dieters in mind. They claim to support your ketosis stated which helps reduce the keto flu symptoms.
I’m going to be honest with you and say I’m not a huge fan of their overall branding it feels kind of gym bro to me but their claims are pretty amazing and it has some great reviews too.
They claim to help improve performance and strength, increase energy and weight loss and promote the use of fat for fuel. It’s lab verified and third party tested which are two great things to look for on supplements.
It contains MTC and BHB salts that help with fasted workouts. According to their claims both of those ingredients help your body tap on fat as fuel instead of muscle when you are training fasted.
I’m probably not their target audience but I feel they are a great option if you are intermittent fasting, like training on an empty stomach, or if you looking for a little fat loss help or a boost on your workout to build lean muscle mass.
Rari nutrition Infinity pre workout
The Infinity pre workout made by rari nutrition uses 100% natural ingredients. It also has no creatine so you can control if you have it or not (most pre workouts come with some added creatine).
It also claims to give no crash probably because their ingredients are as clean as possible.
Actually if you take a look at their ingredients list you’ll find that’s mostly vitamins: B1, B2, B5, B6, and B12 as well as their Infinity proprietary blends, basically a mix of caffeine, black pepper extract, beta alanine, l-citruline, agmatine sulfate, and l-tyrosine.
The combination of ingredients gives you a next level training session which results in faster fat burning. It also helps in building muscle mass.
How to maximize your keto pre-workouts
A pre-workout is honestly as good as you make it to be. So here are a couple things you would keep on mind if you want to get the best results.
Take it at the right time
Almost all pre-workouts work best when taken 30 minutes before your next workout.
However, all bodies are different so I highly advice to tune into your body and notice when it makes the most sense to you. A good pre workout should give you a boost of clean energy that makes all the hard work you put on the gym feel easier.
Mix with water
Almost all pre workout formulas come in powder form to mix with water. Some people like to dry scoop (when you have only the dry powder) but pre workout are more enjoyable when mixed with 8 ounces of water.
You can have it all before training or save some to sip on while working out.
How long does a pre workout last?
A pre workout will last for around 4 hours but much of it depends on your metabolism and the pre-workout you got.
That’s why it’s a good idea to have it around 30 minutes before working out so you can get the kick right as you are getting into the gym
Can you make a keto friendly pre-workout at home?
If you are not a huge fan of any workout powder and prefer to make something at home there are a couple different things you can try
Bulletproof coffee
Bulletproof coffee is packed with caffeine and good for you fats and will help boost any type of workout routine you have. It’s also one of the best keto-friendly and all natural options available.
I feel like this option gives me enough energy to power trough a workout but not so much that I feel wired or tingly. The other good thing about it is that if you follow a keto lifestyle you probably already have all the ingredients to make it on hand.
Other formulas
There are other formulas you might find online that add things like beta alanine powder and citruline malate powder.
Others change the MCT oil on bulletproof coffee for MCT oil powder. The most important part is to make sure you are getting good quality ingredients from certified sellers and that you are mixing them in the right concentrations.
Healthy fats
Finally having some healthy fats before your workout can also boost your energy levels resulting in a most powerful training session. Fat bombs or even a spoonful of cream cheese or some coffee mixed with coconut oil are great high fat options. The great thing about high fat snacks as opposed to traditional pre workouts is that you won’t get any of the adverse effects of having supplements.
