Curious about what goes into Sonic’s new Churro Shake? It’s no surprise that the shake packs a sugary punch.
According to Sonic, the Churro Shake is made with natural vanilla ice cream mixed with caramel and cinnamon sugar. On top of the shake, you’ll find whipped cream, a cherry, and a crunchy churro coated in even more cinnamon sugar.
If you’re a fan of churros, it’s worth noting that Sonic offers them on their menu as well. For just $1.49, you can get a five-piece order of “warm, crispy churros coated with cinnamon sugar,” but you can only order them through the Sonic app.
If the Churro Shake doesn’t already sound sweet enough for you, Sonic offers a variety of additional toppings to take it to the next level.
Opt for freshly sliced bananas or strawberries to add some fruity sweetness, or drizzle on some hot fudge for a decadent touch. Sonic offers mix-ins like Oreo cookie pieces and Reese’s peanut butter for those who want even more flavor (and sugar and calories).
And if you still need more, you can even have chocolate syrup blended in. With all these options, you can customize your Churro Shake. Check out our taste test review of the Churro Shake on our website to see how it all comes together.
Churro Shake price information
While the Churro Shake may not be the cheapest item on Sonic’s menu, it’s still relatively affordable.
During our visit to a Sonic Drive-In a few miles east of New York City, a medium-sized Churro Shake cost $5.39. Interestingly, this is the same price as the Strawberry Cheesecake Master Shake, another medium-sized offering from the chain.
For those looking for a more classic flavor, a medium Classic Chocolate Shake is less expensive at $4.89. The Churro Shake offers a unique and indulgent treat at a reasonable price.
Despite its slightly higher price point, the Churro Shake is worth every penny. In fact, at $5.39 for a medium-sized serving, it costs only 40 cents less than Sonic’s Cheeseburger, which speaks to the shake’s high quality and indulgent flavor profile.
It’s also worth noting that the Churro Shake boasts significantly more calories than the Cheeseburger, making it a truly decadent treat. Compared to other milkshake offerings in the area, such as a medium shake from Baskin Robbins priced at $8.98 via Uber Eats, the Churro Shake is a fair and reasonable price.
Overall, the unique flavor and rich texture of the Churro Shake justify its slightly higher cost.
When is the Sonic Churro shake available?
As of July 25th, 2022, the new Churro Shake from Sonic is now available nationwide, except in Hawaii, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine, according to data company ScrapeHero.
However, the shake can only be ordered through the Sonic Drive-In app during its initial release week. This is a common strategy many fast-food chains and brands employ to encourage app usage.
Thankfully, the Sonic app is user-friendly, so ordering the Churro Shake via the app is a breeze. Starting August 1st, the shake will be available for purchase in-store, making it accessible to both app users and non-app users alike.
Whether you prefer the convenience of drive-through or the pleasure of dine-in, you can indulge in the Churro Shake at Sonic.

Starting August 1st, it can be called in-person as well. The shake will only be available until September 25th, giving app users a two-month window of opportunity and non-app users a seven-week stretch to try it.
Comparing the Sonic Churro Shake to other menu items
While the new Churro Shake from Sonic may seem like a revolutionary menu item, it’s important to note that it’s simply another milkshake option among Sonic’s extensive list of 13 different shakes.
Sonic even refers to them as “shakes” instead of “milkshakes” to avoid implying a specific recipe. The Churro Shake falls under the “Master Shake” category alongside popular shakes like the OREO Chocolate Master Shake and the Strawberry Cheesecake Master Shake.
In contrast, the Classic Shake category features favorites such as the Vanilla Classic Shake, the Strawberry Classic Shake, and Reese’s Peanut Butter Classic Shake. So, while the Churro Shake may be a delicious option with a unique flavor, it’s not a drastic departure from the norm for Sonic.
Nutritional information of the Sonic churro shake
If you’re looking to maintain a healthy diet, fast food chains and milkshakes, in general, are probably not the best options.
And when it comes to fast-food chain milkshakes, the new Churro Shake from Sonic is no exception. A medium-sized Churro Shake contains 960 calories when topped with its standard cherry, whipped topping, cinnamon sugar, and churro garnish. Surprisingly, this is even more than a Sonic Cheeseburger, clocking in at 240 calories higher.
While the exact nutrition information for the Churro Shake is not readily available, we can make some educated guesses based on similar Sonic shakes.
The Strawberry Banana Shake and the Strawberry Cheesecake Shake, both in a medium size, have 930 calories each, slightly less than the Churro Shake. Assuming similar nutritional profiles, the Churro Shake likely contains:
- Around 375 calories from fat.
- 42 grams of fat.
- Twenty-eight grams of saturated fat.
- 125 milligrams of cholesterol.
- 500 grams of sodium.
- About 12 grams of protein.
Although the protein content is somewhat redeeming, the other nutritional values could be better. However, it can be enjoyed in moderation as a treat and not a regular part of one’s diet.
So, is the Churro shake good?
Indeed, we thoroughly enjoyed the Churro Shake, despite its overwhelmingly sweet taste. However, there were some minor criticisms. For instance, the whipped cream topping occasionally dominated the shake’s flavor profile when using a spoon, overpowering the cinnamon churro taste.
However, the churro flavor and vanilla ice cream base were solid when sipped through a straw. On the downside, the cherry and churro pieces had sunken to the bottom of the shake when we arrived home, rendering them impossible to retrieve.
Nevertheless, it’s worth mentioning that we didn’t finish the shake, but that had more to do with our choices than the shake itself.
We paired the Churro Shake with a Sonic Cheeseburger and medium-sized fries, leaving us feeling slightly overwhelmed. Had we consumed the shake alone, the sweet, lightly toasted, cinnamon-flavored shake would have been savored to the last drop without needing any additional calories for several hours.
We also enjoyed a Cherry Burst with Bursting Bubbles, which was well worth the indulgence.
