So keep reading to check what popular items you can have and how you can customize your favorites to make them low carb. All in all eating low carb at Sonic is not only doable but also easy!
Some quick rules:
A quick recap before jumping in on the options of Sonic menu items that are keto diet friendly:
- To make sure your meal is low carb skip the fries and tater tots always. Also skip the onion rings.
- Keep an eye out for bread, buns, and tortillas. You can ask to swap them for lettuce or just remove them.
- The Sonic APP lets you customize your order before going to the restaurant. If you are doing some heavy customizations, order through the app so they have enough time to prepare it and you don’t need to be waiting for itin your car.
- Sonic serves breakfast all day every day. If you don’t want to spend time thinking about what to order and how to customize it you can request some fried egg and bacon for a fully keto-friendly meal.
The BEST Sonic Keto Options
Sonic Breakfast Bowl – Crispy Bacon or Savory Sausage
The great thing about the crispy bacon breakfast bowl or the savory sausage breakfast bowl is that you can have it as is and don’t need to make any customizations.
It comes with the meat you pick (either bacon or sausage), egg, grilled onions, diced tomatoes and cheese.
Bacon Breakfast Burrito
Their breakfast burritos are probably their most popular dish! Just skip the flour tortilla and ask them to serve it in a bowl so it’s also a dish that’s very easy to customize (and great to eat on the go).
Basically you’ll have a warm bowl of bacon, cheese and eggs (yum!). You can also customize the bacon and request sausage instead or even grilled chicken. A good idea when ordering this meal is to add some jalapeños to give it a spicy kick.
No bun classic grilled chicken sandwich
I LOVE this dish and I think you are going to love it too. Basically just request they skip the bun and place everything in a bowl. You’ll get the lettuce, tomato and a large grilled chicken breast in a salad-like format.
It’s a great low calories and low carb option that’s also very high in protein so it’s the Sonic’s menu item I recommend if you are in a weight loss journey.
No bun hot dog (with chili)
There are a lot of options that are probably better than this one but it’s a great life saver if you are dealing with a Sonic location that’s low on options.
Just request the hot dog without the bun and without the sauces and feel free to add the chili extra on top (to make it more fun and interesting than just a plain sausage).
The Sonic chili is made without beans so it’s a low carb option and while not the easiest to eat it’s pretty flavorful.
Sonic has a long list of hot dog options so you can pick between what they have available just make sure you are requesting it without the bun and no sauce (most commercial sauces are packed with sugar).
Sonic Burgers – No bun and no sauces
Sonic burgers are also a great option to have if you are following a low carb diet once you make it a bunless burger. I actually prefer to ask for the burger only instead of a meal since we are not having the fries either. Also make sure they are holding off the BBQ sauce and the ketchup since both of those are huge sugar bombs.
However you can add pickles and mustard to give them an extra punch of flavor with none of the extra carbs.
You can also add American cheese, bacon and even mayo to your burger and order any of their burgers (their double cheeseburger it’s amazing!).
Diet Limeade
Diet limeades are a great low sugar and low carb drink option you can order at Sonic! They are made with squeezed real lime and Sprite Zero so they are a great low carb friendly option when you are monitoring your carb intake.
Diet Cherry Limeade
This is a variation from the diet limeade and one that’s incredibly delicious. It’s made with lime juice, Sprite Zero and their sugar free cherry syrup that’s made with Splenda (actually all diet syrups at Sonic are made with Splenda)
This is a very refreshing drink and thirst quencher and with the low grams and sugars and carbs makes a great drink to enjoy.
Sonic Black Coffee
Remember how Sonic serves breakfast all day every day? Well obviously they carry coffee too! And while they have a ton of sugar laden options you can also order a plain black coffee either hot or served over ice. Just ask them to hold off any syrup or milk.
Other drinks to have on Sonic
While you ‘ll have to skip their slushies an most drinks on their menu (they are packed with grams of carbohidrates after grams of carbohidrates) you can enjoy their unsweetened sweet tea, diet soda, diet coke, and plain water (as well as the limeades and back coffee)
The BEST Sonic add ons you can pick from

- Crispy bacon
- Spicy jalapeños
- Ranch dressing
- American cheese
- Avocado
- Mayo
- Grilled onions
- Mustard
What to avoid at all costs from Sonic when you are on a ketogenic diet
I always prefer to talk about all the things you can have when following a keto diet, however it’s also good to have a cheat sheet of all the things that are better to skip from the menu.
Here are some of the popular options that are better to hold off since they have a high carb count.
- Bread
- Buns
- Tortillas
- French fries
- Mozzarella sticks
- Jalapeño Poppers
- Tater tots
- Applesauce
- Popcorn chicken
- Honey mustard
- BBQ sauce
- Ketchup
- Corn dogs
- Ice cream and sundaes
- Shakes
How can I check the nutritional information
Unlike other restaurants Sonic doesn’t include the itemized nutritional information for each ingredient and rather includes the full meal. However if that’s enough to you (it’s a great overview) you can check their nutrition facts on their website.
Our opinion about Sonic’s low carb options
We honestly love it! It’s a great fast food place to enjoy from time to time (remember it’s always better to enjoy a whole foods nutritious meal at home) that does a good job at offering low carb alternatives. Overall we really like Sonic keto options! You can still enjoy the traditional fast-food fares without all the extra carbs that come with it.
And it’s also fairly easy to order from it making it a great choice when you are short on time. Their cheese breakfast burrito, chili cheese coney and supersonic bacon double cheeseburger (as well as the traditional sonic cheeseburger) are all great fast-food options to enjoy. Just remember to skip the sauces and the breads and tortilla to keep the carbs in check.
